Most of the things we eat or drunk throughout the evening we have never seen or heard of before (and we eat in some of the world best restaurants), a lot we had on this occasion were only available for a few weeks a year and you really begin to understand that when you look back from your final part of the journey, look through the presentation after you have had your time dilation part of the experience. We both opted for the non alcoholic paring, which was also excellent and extraordinary flavours and textures we have never had before, some exquisite new flavours we found here that I doubt we will ever find againĪll the staff were extraordinarily and engaging, they were all as excited about the food as we were, everyone we encountered were happy to talk about the ingredients techniques or origins of the dishes. There is little point telling you about the food, this is a highly experimental restaurant, if your at all allergic or squeamish about ingredients, then you should just keep walking to another of Barcelona’s fine offerings, but if your like us curious and enthralled by the boundaries of food and flavour, this place is for you. This is not a restaurant of any type you have ever experienced, it’s probably more akin to a juxtaposition of a food hall in Harrods and the mind of Dali, it’s food and ideas put together, not necessarily in equal measure - some dishes were clearly identifiable others really challenged our pallets and ideas of what food should be. The experience is a more like a theatre production, featuring food, drink and some amazing staff it’s a good few (three or four) hours long, so we would recommend a nap before dinner so you can enjoy without clock watching and really enjoy the finale. I am certain that some we will definitely remember for years to come. This is a purposeful journey through many different ideas and experiences, the vast majority was Genius at work, some work in progress, and others really mentally challenging that I’m sure will take us a long time to understand and appreciate. Genius takes years to understand and Enigma is about experimentation and testing boundaries of ingredients, techniques, textures and flavours. Now, tackling a review of Enigma was harder than expected, but the creative essence of this restaurant came to me after walking through the Salvador Dali museum in Figueres, as initially it was extremely difficult to articulate what this restaurant was about. admirers of Albert Adrià “One of the World’s Best Pastry Chefs“ we decided to stay in Barcelona and try one of the many great restaurants this city has to offer and the ‘latest gastronomic expression’ of Albert. MoreĪs you may know from our other posts, we are fortunate to travel just to experience food - on this occasion we are on our way back to El Celler De Can Roca, after a gracious invitation to experience the restaurant again.Īs we great. The environment is weird, it’s a combination of being in a spaceship or artificial womb, with somewhat intrusive music and nightclub like lighting, but just relax and go with it and it’s a lot of fun. The only strange thing was that they seem to close early, we would happily have kept on exploring the wine and cocktail list and picking up snacks, but they close earlier than any restaurant in Barcelona it seems! One disappointment was the option to go to the burger bar, it’s a great burger sure but there are great burgers in a lot of places these days and there was nothing unique about it as with almost all of the other courses which were very innovative, especially the campari meringue, and the perfected chicken wings. It seems it may have changed a bit since we visited in its opening week. You can pick and choose what you like, we were not instructed to take a tasting menu or that there was a minimum spend, as some others have suggested, but we did spend around €150-200 each anyway which was just what we expected given the info on the website beforehand. We had the same array of great cocktails, lovely champagne and strange. There was no real difference in the experience other than the music was a bit louder in the evening. Visited twice in one week, once for ‘afternoon drinks’ and once in the evening.
